PAX CHRISTI METRO NEW YORK Was Jesus having a bad day? How could he have been so rude to the Canaanite woman? This isn’t the Jesus we know, love, or follow. It took the determination of a “lowly” female, the desperation of a mother in distress, to set him right. And he did sit up and pay attention, even if his disciples were anything but pleased. So who are we in this scene: the persistent mother, the irritated disciples, or the malleable Jesus? Who would we want to be? Hopefully we are the one who is as committed to justice as to never stop demanding it no matter the reaction of others, and the one who is as strong in our faith as to believe that compassion underlies even what appears to be the hardest of hearts. "War destroys. And we must cry out for peace. Peace sometimes gives the idea of stillness, but it is never stillness. It is always an active peace. I think that everyone must be committed in the matter of peace, to do everything that they can, what I can do from here. Peace is the language we must speak." Pope Francis
